Le Murate. Progetti Arte Contemporanea is a centre for artistic research and production and international exchange managed by Associazione MUS.E under the artistic direction of Valentina Gensini, hosted in the restored spaces of the former city prison, which has been transformed by the City of Florence into a cultural district devoted to the contemporary in all its permutations. Tasked by the Director of Culture of the City of Florence, since March of 2014, the centre has been proposing exhibitions, meetings, critical analyses, performances, workshops and public art projects centring on the themes of contemporary art and its languages. The strongly interdisciplinary orientation on which basis the projects are selected and produced aims at promoting active involvement of Florence’s citizenry. Since it opened, one aspect of the focus of Le Murate. Progetti Arte Contemporanea on production of artworks and performances has been to select national and international artists invited to conduct research sojourns devoted to specific projects that reserve special attention for the social context, the historical or collective memory linked to the site and environmental awareness and participatory practices.
